In 1901 Yūkoku authored a woodblock-printed book entitled Kotori No Negura (i.e., Roosts of the Little Birds). It included the thirty-six pages of flower and (or) bird pictures shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. While the shapes of objects in these pictures are true-to-life their colors are only partly so. This drawing style is remarkably similar to that of Bairei Kōno who was a prolific maker of flower and bird prints in the late 1800s. Nothing has been recorded about Yūkoku’s personal life so it is not clear whether he was one of Bairei’s many students.
